Every community has its sound. For Mamelodi, that sound is rooted in rhythm, resilience, and the electrifying energy of Amapiano. Freddy Mabatle, known to fans as DJ Cooker, has emerged as one of Pretoria’s most authentic musical storytellers — and his mission goes far beyond the decks. With a deep passion for the genre and a heart anchored in township pride, DJ Cooker is using his platform to uplift untapped talent, redefine local sound, and push Amapiano to global heights.
From intimate weddings to packed shisanyamas, Cooker’s journey is a testament to what happens when purpose meets preparation — and how music can become a movement.
Built in Mamelodi, Backed by Legacy

Cooker’s earliest encounters with music were personal and powerful. Raised in a home filled with vinyl records and township house tapes, his father and older brother unknowingly laid the foundation for a lifelong passion. “I was a dancer first — a real skhothani,” Cooker reflects. “But the music pulled me in deeper.”
By 2013, Amapiano’s underground pulse began to shake the townships. Influenced by pioneers like DJ Nani and DJ Mnc, Cooker immersed himself in the scene — learning sound engineering from mentors like Sir HeavyDeep Kabini and landing small gigs at weddings and street parties. It was a performance at Jack Bhuda chisanyama that shifted his path: “They told me to play. I wasn’t ready, but I did it anyway — and the crowd went wild. That night, DJ Cooker was born.”
Amapiano With a Personal Signature
What sets DJ Cooker apart is his ability to create a sound that feels both soulful and streetwise. His signature mixtapes — including Shades of Winter/Spring, Empire of House, and Matured Sounds — blend jazzy piano chords, private school Amapiano grooves, and the raw, drum-heavy intensity of kasi sghubu.
“I don’t just mix songs,” he explains. “I build moods. My goal is for people to feel something real — joy, nostalgia, pride.”
Inspired by creators like Kabza De Small and MFR Souls, Cooker crafts his mixes like a narrative: seamless, intentional, and emotionally grounded. From unreleased exclusives to local anthems, every track choice reflects a larger story — one rooted in community and culture.
Growth Through Grit and Collaboration
While talent sparked his journey, it was consistency and collaboration that pushed Cooker forward. In 2016, he began receiving 15-minute set opportunities during DJ Dinho and Sir HeavyDeep’s performances — a window that would open doors to deeper industry connections.
Cooker soon gained the respect of top-tier producers like Sje Konka, Kelvin Momo, and Mdu aka TRP, building a reputation for his ear, energy, and professionalism. Strategic collaborations with artists like DJ Kamza, Lata SA, and Vine Musiq expanded his influence across provinces — all while remaining grounded in his Mamelodi roots.
“This is bigger than me,” he says. “I’m just the vessel. It’s the music — and the people behind it — that matter most.”
Mentorship With Meaning
For Cooker, success means very little if it can’t be shared. Deeply aware of the lack of infrastructure and support for local artists in Mamelodi, he has become a passionate advocate and mentor for emerging talent in the community.
“There’s so much skill here — but not enough opportunity,” he says. “We need more studios, more platforms, more investment.”
Today, he’s actively mentoring up-and-coming DJs and producers like El Padrino and Sjavas De Deejay, offering guidance, knowledge, and collaborative opportunities. Just as legends poured into him, Cooker is now pouring into others — solidifying his legacy not just as a performer, but as a builder.
Designing Experiences on the Dancefloor

As a resident DJ at Monaco Shisanyama, Cooker is more than an entertainer — he’s an experience architect. Each set is carefully curated to read the room, shift the mood, and spark joy.
“Whether I’m playing private school vibes or raw kasi heat, the goal is always the same — keep the floor alive,” he explains.
By fusing emotion with energy, and balancing soul with sghubu, Cooker creates performances that speak to multiple generations — proof that Amapiano is as universal as it is local.
A Future Built on Legacy
Looking ahead, DJ Cooker has his eyes set on expansion with purpose. His next milestone is to release a debut EP, offering fans a deeper dive into his sound as a producer. He’s also in the process of building a fully equipped studio in Mamelodi — a space designed not just for recording, but for nurturing township talent.
“My dream is to create a space where young artists feel seen, heard, and supported,” he says. “Because if Amapiano could change my life — it can change theirs too.”
Final Word: Sound as a Force for Change
DJ Cooker’s story is not just about music — it’s about movement, mentorship, and meaning. From humble beginnings to big-stage moments, his work proves that when talent meets intention, culture can be both preserved and propelled.
In a genre built on collaboration and community, Cooker stands tall as a trailblazer — carrying the sound of Mamelodi into new spaces while making sure the next generation has everything they need to shine.
