How to Raise or Lower Pool pH: A Straightforward Guide for Homeowners

Owning a pool comes with a learning curve, and few things trip up new pool owners more than water chemistry. Among all the numbers you’ll track, pH sits at the top of the list. It’s the single most important factor in keeping your water balanced, your equipment protected, and your swim time enjoyable. The good news? Once you understand what pH does and how to adjust it, keeping your new pool in check becomes second nature.

What Is Pool pH and Why Does It Matter?

pH measures how acidic or basic your pool water is, on a scale from 0 to 14. A reading of 7 is neutral, anything below that is acidic, and anything above is basic, or alkaline. For swimming pools, the sweet spot is a narrow band just above neutral. Water that stays in this range feels comfortable on skin and eyes, keeps sanitizers working efficiently, and prevents damage to pool surfaces and equipment.

When pH drifts too far in either direction, problems follow quickly. Low pH makes water corrosive, which can eat away at metal fittings, ladders, and heaters while also irritating swimmers. High pH does the opposite: it causes scaling on surfaces, clouds the water, and reduces the effectiveness of chlorine or other sanitizers. Neither extreme is something you want to deal with, especially in a brand-new pool where you’re trying to protect your investment from day one.

Testing Your Water Before You Adjust Anything

Before you add a single chemical, test your water. Skipping this step is one of the most common mistakes new pool owners make. Test strips and liquid test kits are both reliable options, and digital testers offer even more precision if you want to invest a little more upfront.

Test at least twice a week, and more often if your pool sees heavy use or experiences rain, since both can throw off your balance. Testing consistently also helps you spot patterns. If your pH keeps creeping up or down at a similar rate, you’ll get better at anticipating adjustments instead of constantly reacting to them.

How to Raise Pool pH

If your test results show low pH, the water has become too acidic. The most common fix is adding sodium carbonate, often labeled as pH increaser or soda ash. This chemical raises pH while having a relatively mild effect on total alkalinity, making it a targeted solution when pH is the specific issue.

To raise pH properly, dissolve the recommended amount in a bucket of water first, following the dosage instructions on the product label based on your pool’s volume. Pour it around the perimeter of the pool with the pump running to help it circulate evenly. Avoid dumping it in one spot, since concentrated chemicals can damage surfaces or create uneven distribution. After a few hours of circulation, retest before adding more. Small, gradual adjustments are always safer than trying to fix everything in one go.

How to Lower Pool pH

When your pH climbs too high, you’ll need an acidic product to bring it back down. Muriatic acid and dry acid, also known as sodium bisulfate, are the two most common choices. Muriatic acid works quickly but requires careful handling since it’s a strong liquid acid. Dry acid is a granular alternative that many homeowners find easier and safer to handle, though it can affect alkalinity slightly more than muriatic acid does.

As with raising pH, always follow label instructions for dosage based on your pool’s size. Add the product slowly, again with the pump circulating, and never pour acid directly into the skimmer. Give the water time to mix thoroughly, then retest. If the level is still too high, repeat the process in small increments rather than adding a large dose all at once. Rushing this step is how homeowners end up overcorrecting and swinging pH too far in the other direction.

Keeping pH Stable Over Time

Once you’ve dialed in your pH, the goal shifts to maintenance. Total alkalinity acts as a buffer for pH, so keeping alkalinity in a healthy range makes pH swings less frequent and easier to manage. Weather, bather load, and even the source water used to fill your pool can all influence how often adjustments are needed, so don’t be surprised if you’re making small tweaks throughout the swimming season.

For new pool owners, establishing a simple routine, testing regularly, adjusting gradually, and keeping basic supplies on hand, makes a significant difference. Pool chemistry isn’t complicated once you understand the fundamentals, and staying consistent now will save you time, money, and frustration for as long as you own your pool.
